Burmingham Jail Passage- Based Free Write

"You may well ask, "Why direct action? Why sit-ins, marches, etc.? Isn't negotiation a better path?" You are exactly right in your call for negotiation. Indeed, this is the purpose of direct action. Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and establish such creative tension that a community that has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue."

This passage in in the letter is very interesting to me and I really liked the way that it was worded. I liked the way the Martin Luther King, Jr used words to get what he wants and to get his point across to any person that reads the letter. Instead of something negative, a negative sounding word, he used the words like "creative." And what Martin Luther King is getting at, the purpose of the letter is nonviolence. It is the key to everything for him is nonviolence. The sit-ins and the marches, it can help make a change in the community. With these nonviolent actions, the communities will be forced to deal with the issue at hand and change their ways because, the time for change is NOW.
